PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our partner convention in Sierra Leone is the Baptist Convention of Sierra Leone (BCSL). They are maintaining three clinics and a project for blind people, the Blind Rehabilitation Project (BRP). Beside the clinics in Kassirie and Nonkoba there is a big eye clinic located in Lunsar. Now on this premises there are also the headquarters of BCSL and BRP. Lunsar has found great importance for the church convention. In this place and in all the region the facilities of BCSL are adding a positive development and improvement of life quality.

The overall poverty rate in Sierra Leone involves many people getting to the clinics very late since they cannot pay for the treatments. Often then it’s too late for any help. The situation has worsened in the years of 2014-2016 through the ebola epidemic and the health care system still faces major challenges. During this time EBM INTERNATIONAL was able to provide humanitarian aid, amongst others doing projects in cooperation with the eye clinic, but since there are even fewer people that can afford treatment the clinics find it hard to function economically.

Beside many cataract surgeries the clinic is a contact point for all sorts of different illnesses. At the connecting BRP blind people are being offered help in everyday life. They can learn in different classes how to stay mobile, how to care for their families, and how to do their house chores and their handiworks. All clinics lack of enough medical tools. Too often there isn’t even clean water. They are in need of pumps and generators. The infrastructure around the hospitals is also very challenging and complicates the work on top of everything.
