PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Poverty is the main reason for blindsight and disability. The factors responsible for that are natural disasters, malnutrition, lack of clean water, bad hygienic conditions, and a lack of medical care. Due to the vicious circle of poverty and disability people are being excluded from society and their further developments are being restricted.

Many of them suffer from cataract and can hardly see anything. They are a burden to their families since they are not able to live independently anymore. They will never be able to see anymore and since they have the psychological pressure of burdening their poor families many of them can’t find meaning in their lives anymore.

Even many children and youth are affected. They don’t suffer from cataract yet but have eye infections and poor eyesight, and the results are headaches, dizziness, and vertigo.

We are helping our Indian partners so they can offer free medical treatment. Our projects include four clinics in Pithapuram, Vuyyuru, Serango, and Gotlam. There they are doing stationary work as well as mobile work in so called eye camps. Here a team of medical personnel of social workers goes from village to village where people are being checked. They are being taught about illnesses especially cataract and transported to the hospitals for surgery. After the treatment they are brought back to the village. The team also goes to schools. The kids are being checked and are taught about hygienic measures.

Every year about 3500 cataract surgeries are being done free of charge. Without his kind of help many people would have been blind all of their lives.
